Spring preparations for your home

Gutters are often overlooked during spring cleaning. Gutters tend to fill with leaves and debris which can lead to standing water. Mosquitoes will often hide in the cool damp leaves during the day, lay eggs in any standing water then come down in the evenings to feast on you and your family as you try to enjoy these nice spring nights.

Mulching. Adding too much mulch to flower beds that touch the home can provide harborage and protected avenues of passage from your yard and into your home. It is recommended to keep mulch levels down below the silt plate of your home's exterior foundations.

Exterior lighting. The way we light our homes plays a large part in the types and amounts of pests that are attracted to it. A Yellow LED or Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) are recommended for exterior patio and/or porch lights. LEDs and CFLs offer the best energy efficiency and emit less heat. Any lights that can be turned off during the night should be. String lights attract a lot of spiders and flying pests.

Patio Fans. All it takes is a gentle breeze from a medium-sized rotating fan to deter most flying insects including mosquitoes. The gusts of wind from the fan will also disperse the scent of carbon dioxide and other chemical cues that mosquitoes use to find their next meal.

Pest repelling plants. All plants should be checked to see if they are a danger to you or your pets before buying. Plants that can help deter pests are, Marigolds, Citronella, Catnip, Lavender, Basil, Rosemary, Sage, Mint, Allum, and Lemon Balm.

Existing plants. Vegetation should not be touching the exterior of your building. Bushes growing up against the home can provide harborage and shortcuts for pests to enter your home. We recommend keeping bushes and plants trimmed off the exterior of your home and tree branches staty trimmed a minimum of 3 feet from roof line to help prevent rodents accessing your roof and entering your attic. Branches leaning on your home and bushes growing against can also hide or cause structural damage allowing for pests or even water to enter your home.
