How to Decrease the Chance of a Mosquito Infestation this Spring

How to Decrease the Chance of a Mosquito Infestation this SpringBelieve it or not, spring is just around the corner! As welcoming as the warm weather sounds, the season does have its drawbacks. With mosquitoes being a primary concern this time of year, it's important to be prepared. These blood-thirsty, disease-spreading pests seem to be everywhere once early spring rolls around, and they won't go away until the fall. While it can be quite difficult to completely mosquito-proof a home, there are a few things you can do to reduce the chances of getting bitten by mosquitoes in your own home.

The first thing you'll want to do is ensure all doors, windows, and screens are in proper working order. Look for mosquitoes in areas such as between windows and blinds, under tables and desks, corners and any dark areas. Vacuum up or remove all the mosquitoes you find. Remember, do not use camping-style/outdoor bug sprays indoors, as improper use of these sprays can be unhealthy to humans.

For the outside of your home, you will need to remove any standing water. After it rains, water may collect in many areas, thus creating a perfect harborage for mosquitoes. It is important to drain or remove as much standing water as possible. This will reduce mosquito breeding areas. Possible areas that may need to be addressed are:

  • buckets
  • gutters
  • pool covers
  • potted plants (remove excess water)
  • animal water bowl (clean out 2 times a week)
  • bird baths (empty once a week)
  • lawn (cut back watering if there is puddling)
  • ponds (stock with mosquito fish)

Mosquitoes need water to exist, and with the weather warming up they can complete their life cycle in 7-10 days!

While mosquitos can be a problem in the spring, so too can many other pests. Ants, wasps, yellow jackets, carpet beetles, cockroaches, gnats, and rodents, can all start to stir.
